Stand Up Paddleboard: Start Learning Now!

One of my favorite activities for the beach undoubtedly would be paddleboarding. Stand Up Paddleboarding or short SUP is a good activity for people of any age or fitness level and is very easy to learn. In fact, you can start now.

At first, when you see someone paddling you may think that he is searching for something lost in the water or at least these were my first thoughts.

But, actually paddleboarding is one very nice swim or ride on the ocean surface and if you ask me the best time of the day for that would be somewhere around sunrise or before sunset. The sea is calm then and the turquoise waters are crystal clear. Of course that you can practice paddling on the rivers and lakes as well. It was invented in Hawaii, which it doesn’t come as a surprise since surfboarding was invented there too, sometime in the 1990s when started to gain some popularity.

Paddleboard is one of the best investments you can make for sports and outdoor activities. Firstly, the board can be very light and you can carry it even on an airplane. Next, the paddle can be adjusted to every member of the family, and even your dog can paddle with you. Lastly, you can go fishing. Yes, it’s true. The boards are big enough and stable to carry your anchor. Moreover, except for paddling in the calm waters, you can surf paddle in the waves if you wish, you can take exercises or even practice yoga which became quite popular nowadays, the SUP yoga.

What is exactly paddleboarding? Stand Up Paddleboarding or SUP is a water sport, a mix of surfboarding and kayaking where the person stands on the board and propel with a paddle.

 

Although anyone can jump into it and start paddling without any previous knowledge or tutorials, still for good paddling experience you need to know these useful tips you’ll read about further on how to be good at paddle boarding and how to choose the right board and paddle for you.

 

How to paddleboard?

When you get on the stand-up paddleboard for the first time you should be paddling on your knees first before you stand up and start paddling standing. Except sometimes when you do get tired of paddling standing up you would probably like to change the body position and paddle on your knees for a while. So, it’s a good paddling position to get used to anyhow. When you finally get up standing on the board you should find the best position or spot on the board where you’ll be standing. Probably somewhere in the middle would be for achieving the best balance with your legs widen, knees slightly bent and straight back.

 

If you accidentally fall off the board the best way to get back is by sliding on your chest. Once you’re up put your paddle quickly in the water since it will help you maintain the balance making you more stable in the water with the blade fully in the water when pulling. One of your hands should be placed on top of the grip and the other on the shaft of the paddle. If you only paddle with your arms you’ll get tired quickly and the reason won’t be so much because you are a beginner, but because your other body muscles should be activated too.

In the essence whenever we get tired while doing sports is because we don’t breath properly, are dehydrated or we are using only one part of the body to fulfill the activity.

 

The bigger the paddle board the better stability

If you are a beginner a bigger paddle board will give you a better stability. Most of the boards’ weight around 13 kg and can support nearly 200 kg. Although they are designed and intended for one person, are stable enough with two on board as well. Depending on your pump you can inflate the SUP in about 1 min with an electric pump and deflate in 5 min.

There are three basic types of stand up paddle boards: surf, all-around, and flatwater/race. The all-around’s are great for beginners since they are thinner, wider thus more stable. Except for the board, you’ll need an appropriate paddle and a leash for your leg ankle that would be linked with the board. In that way in case you fall off you won’t lose your board.

Whenever planning on SUP check on the weather before you go and pick an area that is calmer without any boat traffic if possible.
